    Parallels rocks

That’s a hot topic recently in the Apple world. Parallels made installing virtualized OSes really easy and fast. Thanks to it I’ve already played with Gentoo, Fedora, Ubuntu, Windows 98 and Windows XP on my MacBook Pro. Now I can install Ubuntu while reading installation manual in Safari, playing songs with iTunes and chatting with iChat at the same time.
Even better I can install two OSes simultaneously. I can test my software under Linux without having second box, share my network connection with it, boot or install it directly from CD image, and do tons of other things. If it won’t be enough, there something really, really cool left out there…

    Parallels + Windows XP

That’s the main reason Mac community loves Parallels. Tight integration with Windows makes life a lot easier for some people – like for those using Windows-only apps, testing websites in bull-crap IE or playing Solitaire ;-)).
It’s now even cooler as some time ago Parallels team published a beta of the new Parallels Desktop software which offers a Coherence mode which (almost) completely hides Windows and allows running Mac apps and windows apps side-by-side and launching Windows apps directly from the dock!

If that wouldn’t be enough recently I’ve discovered a program which allows me to install multiple IEs on one Windows installation. So good bye Windows 98 and multiple XP instances! Now I have Windows XP with IE 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0 installed, all running alongside each other. That rocks!!!

My next wish would be to let Parallels tell me some jokes, but that’s probably too much…

    Macs@Sabre

I have been really busy for the last couple of weeks. It wasn’t because of too much work at Sabre, playing Scrabble all the time or because of my birthday party. So what it was? As the post title suggests it had something to do with Macs and Sabre. And actually it had :-))
So everything started about a month ago, when I found a footage, that some guys at Sabre use Macs instead of Windows PCs. A real surprise to me. The bigger was when I asked my boss if I could bring my own MacBook Pro (it used to stay at home collecting dust ;-)) to work on it. He allowed me without a single question! Amazing! :-)))

So now I am a proud owner of the only Mac in our office! Needless to say that now I like my work even more than before!

Why Windows is worth its money?

This is totally stupid. A copy of MacOS X Tiger costs $129 in any retail store on earth. Despite the fact that you need a Mac to run it, it is impressive, that you can have the best operating on the planet for such a money.

On the other side there is Windows. Piece of crap, not updated till 2001, for 299 bucks (XP Home doesn’t count). Not to mention that you need a anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-bla-bla-bla software to run it properly. Bad word – to run it at all.
But you may be wondering what’s the point? So the point is that there is one thing in this operating system, that for us (web developers) makes it worth its money. Internet Explorer. The most popular and crappiest web browser on earth. That is what I bought my Windows for.

And you know what? It works perfectly as an Internet Explorer workstation ;-)))

    MacBook Pro? It’s gorgeous!

Finally, after one-and-a-half months of waiting I’ve received my brand new MacBookPro! And it’s the fastest and most beautiful laptop I’ve ever used. It’s faster than I’ve ever imagined. It’s that fast, that I have to start thinking faster, because it finishes tasks before I decide what to do next ;-))

I’m quite busy right now, so I’ll post more details later. Stay calm!

    New Mac mini a disappointment?

Yesterday, Apple has unveiled it’s new Intel-based Mac mini. Now it has a Core Duo (or Solo) processor, up to 2GB of RAM, faster hard drive, and Apple’s Front Row with a remote control. Everything seems to be fine, but there’s one little glitch that brings attention of the Mac community. The integrated graphics chip from Intel (GMA 950), which does not have it’s own dedicated VRAM, but dynamically borrows resources from the system RAM. Needless to say, that this is rather a poor solution, so the chip performance could be the biggest bottleneck of the whole system.

But IMHO, the people who are complaining about it, are missing a one significant point. This is a non-gamer, starters machine! Although it is a Mac, and new Macs usually works pretty well for a couple of years, this could be much different with the Mac mini. It’s designed solely to give PC users an opportunity to “taste a Mac” and serve for no more than a year or two. And that’s why Apple did this. Want to give Mac a try? Buy mini. Want some more? Buy iMac, iBook or whatever you want.

Apple is a hardware company. The more it sells, the more money it earns. It’s that simple. Period.

    Waiting for my MacBook Pro

Waiting for a dreamed computer is a hard time. Especially if it takes a month or more. I’ve ordered mine on February 1st, and the guys at Cortland (polish Apple reseller), said that they hope to ship them by the end of February (but they didn’t say which year ;-)). My waiting was interrupted today by a post at TUAW with the first pictures of unpacked one (click here to see). I must say they are looking great, especially the aluminum enclosure :-). Now, I’m eagerly waiting to see the battery life tests, because it’s the last thing that nobody knows. I hope it would be as long as my old iBook G3, which could run on battery for about 4 hours without a problem. So fingers crossed!

    Few updates

Recently, my work at home is taking all my free time, but I’ve finally found some time to give you
some insight into things that bothers me the most. So first of all …

    there are new Intel Macs!!!

I was eagerly waiting for them to replace my good, old iBook G3. So here they are! I would probably stick to the MacBook Pro. They will be shipping sometime in February, so there is no hurry. Although I’ve already started saving money… :-))

    The New Year has come!!!

Huh… have you notice the order? Yes, you are right. Unveiling new Macs is far more important to me than the new year. You know – it’s a matter of changing a calendar to a new one ;-)). But there is one thing that most of us are doing on New Year’s Day, and it’s called a New Year’s Declaration. And yes, you are right. I made a few this time. You would be surprised if I told you something about them. But I’m not going to do that. I hope, they will come to daylight sometime this year…
