Yahoo Mash shutting down (or how to shut down a web application the bad way)

I’m not a Mash user, but I found this story interesting. As you can read on TechCrunch, Yahoo Mash, a social networking site, will be shutting down in a month from now. As always it is not a nice thing for a user, but sometimes it happens. And here’s what makes it very interesting from the usability perspective.

If you carefully read the email posted on TechCrunch site, then you may notice it says you need to copy your data manually as in a month it become completely unavailable. Wait a second. Manually? Manually is so last century. It is so Web 1.0. Don’t they have a way to export all user data into an XML file, or all the contacts as vcards? Or maybe a nice PDF presentation with all the data on it? It is not that hard to create such a functionality, and from a user perspective, in this not very pleasant conditions, it is at least a nice way to say them “thank you” for using the service.

Looks like somebody at Yahoo didn’t do a homework.

NBA website and presenting relevant content

I’ve spotted this nice feature today morning. As you may know (if you are a NBA fan like me) the NBA season is moving into the final phase before playoffs start in April. I have a RSS subscription for the recent game results but I visit the website to check the league tables. There are 2 useful types of table layouts: the division one, which is more convenient in the beginning of the season, and the conference one which is useful when season ends as some teams are struggling to find their way into playoffs and it’s easier to compare their positions in two tables rather than six ones.

And here’s a nice feature: so far by clicking “Standings” link in the website’s main menu you were taken into division tables page, but from now on (as the season ends) this link will take you directly to the more relevant conference tables. Very nice way to show info that currently matters the most.

    Where is Jakub?

Whooaa!! It has been long since my last post, but nothing comes without a purpose. This time I simply wasn’t in the mood of writing. You know – it’s better not to post anything in such moments. Quality always comes before quantity!

So you may wonder what’s up. For those of you who do not start the day by checking my profile on LinkedIn ;-), I have moved to another team within Sabre – the User Experience team in Travel Network! There are currently five of us (2 in the US and 3 in Poland) working on some really cool stuff: Flash+Flex+Adobe AIR, interaction design, information architecture, cutting edge web technologies and frameworks – and everything on the Macs! A perfect chose so far!!

So what I’m doing right now? Currently working on a Web 2.0 prototype, learning Ruby in spare time, reading much about animation and design stuff. It’s pretty neat, as all of this I can do on my Mac and lights away from the **** PCs.

As I’m out of the ‘hibernation mode’ expect the updates coming more often!
